School for International Training (SIT) in Vermont, USA, is looking for a new academic director for its study abroad program in Iceland. The job is a renewable, year long position, located at University Centre of the Westfjords in Ísafjörður. Application date is by 10 July and anticipated job start is 1 August. The University Centra has collaborated with SIT regarding summer courses since 2008 but in 2016, the study abroad program in the theme Climate Change and the Arctic was added. Through that program, SIT sends two groups every year, for one semester each, to Iceland where they dwell and work mostly in Ísafjörður. Additionally, in 2018 UW and SIT took up collaboration on masters‘ studies at the University Centre so the partnership is pretty tight, with a considerable number of students coming over. The academic director oversees and organises this exchange, they have an assistant who is also based at UW and both positions receive salaries from SIT, either directly or via UW.
Established jobs in Ísafjörður, via University Centre of the Westfjords, have been growing in numbers over the past few years. Apart from the aforementioned positions for SIT there are also positions such as the postdoctoral position of the Vilhjálmur Stefánsson Institution and other researchers who work at UW on long terrm fellowships and grants. That’s still excluding a number of academics who come from all over the world, to stay at the University Centre for a shorter period. UW alone has 7 full time positions but additionally, shares positions with other institutions and hosts postitions such as the SIT employees, so all in all there are 17 job positions at the University Centre on yearly basis.
