Beach Clean Up in pictures

Students on the course Pollution in the Coastal Arctic had a beach clean up on the First Day of Summer last week, not the least to celebrate Earth Day which was on 22 April. The clean up was a collaboration with students from MÍ College; UW students organised the day and the college students participated in the project, hand in results at MÍ and get their work evaluated there.

The young people did a good job, first they were driven to Bolungarvík where they cleaned up a particular area of the beach there. Then they came back to Ísafjörður and picked up trash on the shore by street Fjarðarstræti. All the rubbish was collected, categorised and documented so the students can use the data for their projects.

The weather was fairly good, with summer just having arrived, the group enjoyed being outdoors and were competitive. A curious seal even followed them for a while, probably glad to get rid of some of the trash polluting its surroundings.

Afterwards, the group gathered for a coffee break at the UW headquarters so the college students were able to take a look around at the facilities and seemed to like it, not the least our specialized library which is one of the smallest ones in Iceland.
