Basque Center Iceland, the Idea, the project and the future.
This week Héðinn Birnir Ásbjörnsson will visit us and tell us about the Basque Center Iceland (Baskasetur). The goal of Baskasetur is to be an international center for cultural exchange in Djúpavík, Árneshreppur. The Baskasetur is intended to share the history of the region and the coexistence of humans and nature, particularly coastal culture, in collaboration with the University Centre of the Westfjords and Albaola in the Basque Country, Spain. The Baskasetur will be located in the tanks of the former herring factory in Djúpavík.
Héðinn was raised in Djúpavík, Árneshreppur, in the Strandir region. He is the CEO of Hótel Djúpavík and the chairman of the Baskasetur in Djúpavík. Graduated from the social sciences track at Framhaldsskólinn á Laugum in 2001. He earned a diploma in Rural Tourism from Hólar University in 2003 and a diploma in Aquaculture from Hólar University in 2004. In 2013, he obtained certification in real estate, business, and ship sales from the University of Iceland.
For the past 30 years, he has worked on developing the tourism company in Djúpavík, guiding historical tours, maintenance work, and various other tourism-related projects. During winters, he has taken on various jobs, including working at sea, but for the past 10 years, he has primarily worked as a real estate agent in the capital region, West Iceland, and the Westfjords.
