In the coming weeks, UW master's students will defend their theses. The subjects are varied and the students are from both master's programs, Coastal Marine Management and Coastal Communities and Regional Development. The defenses are accessible to everyone through zoom links but they are also open to the public, at the University Centre of the Westfjords in Ísafjörður.

Abstract: Coastal regions worldwide, including the Arctic, are dynamic and complex environments experiencing amplified climate change impacts. In this research project, a coastal classification system was implemented to facilitate sustainable management and decision-making for Jones Sound, Nunavut's unique coastal ecosystem in the Canadian High Arctic. By analyzing an open historical dataset (1983) of oblique helicopter surveys covering 43% of Jones Sound's coastline (excluding fjords, small islands, and bays, which make up the remaining 57%), alongside contemporary aerial and satellite imagery, various coastal features were mapped along a 2923-kilometer coastline. Characterizing the longshore variability in coastal systems, the coastline was categorized into four distinct geographic regions: Coburg Island, Devon Island, Ellesmere Island, and North Kent Island. The results depict the distribution of various geomorphological features, highlighting patterns and diversity on each island. Jones Sound exhibits a coexistence of sheltered and open coasts, with rocky cliffs and unconsolidated sediment dominating (37.4%). Beach terraces with or without rock platforms (37.6%) and deltas (7.1%) were identified, emphasizing the importance of low-lying coastal systems for human use. Minor coastal types include glacier margins, rocky cliffs without sediment, rocky coasts without cliffs, and sandy-gravel spits. While contributing to a better understanding of the spatial distribution of coastal systems in the region, the research's outcome will support Inuit communities, coastal managers, and policymakers in managing the biophysical coastal systems of Jones Sound.
