“Midnight Sun” - Exploration of the maritime and geological landscapes of the Westfjords.

On Friday August 16th at 3pm, Giulia Grossmann and Pedro Junger will give some insight into their work in progress at The University Center of the Westfjords, Suðurgata 12, Ísafjörður. We welcome people to join us for a brief presentation and a chat between 3 and 4 on Friday afternoon. Some beer and snacks will be served.

The filmmaker and the scientist have been spending some weeks in two residencies this summer, first on the trimaran Peter Pan – Arctic lab expeditions operating from Ísafjörður harbor and currently with ArtsIceland residencies for international artists in Ísafjörður.

“Midnight Sun” explores the maritime and geological landscapes of the Westfjords at both macroscopic and microscopic scales, establishing connections between the textures that characterize these environments at different levels of observation. This research is the fruit of a collaboration between Pedro Junger, a research ecologist specializing in microbial ecology, and Giulia Grossmann, filmmaker. Combining scientific research and a cinematographic approach, they examine these changing landscapes through a field methodology that integrates oral narratives, local myths and ecological investigations. They will exhibit their research conducted during their residency as a video and scientific installation, serving as an update on a film project still in progress.

Giulia Grossmann

Her films investigate humanity's relationship with the Earth, featuring diverse landscapes such as the Basque mountains, the Mexican desert, the Atlantic Ocean, Iceland's volcanoes, and the space between Earth and Mars. By integrating exact and social sciences, her collaborative approach reveals how science and imagination can offer fresh insights into our world.

Pedro Junger

is a postdoctoral researcher (CNRS, IBENS, Paris) using molecular and imaging data to study marine plankton ecology and diversity at planetary scale. He has participated in several oceanographic expeditions, including on the mythical TARA scientific schooner.

The project is supported by the University Center of the Westfjords, ArtsIceland, Culture Moves Europe, Gothe-Institute and ArTeC – École Universitaire de Rescherche, cneai = part of the Academic Council.
