Thesis Defense: Energy Transition in Nova Scotia: Lessons from Danish Experiences Developing an Offshore Wind Industry

In the coming weeks, UW master's students will defend their theses. The subjects are varied and the students are from both master's programs, Coastal Marine Management and Coastal Communities and Regional Development. The defenses are accessible to everyone through zoom links but they are also open to the public, at the University Centre of the Westfjords in Ísafjörður.

Abstract: This thesis investigates the development of the offshore
wind energy sector in Denmark, to make policy
recommendations for Nova Scotia, Canada, focusing on
spatial, financial, environmental, and policy dimensions.
Utilizing content analysis, 73 sources related to the Danish
offshore wind sector were analyzed to extract relevant
keywords and concepts. Findings were sorted into clusters
and subclusters and further analyzed to identify key
issues, challenges, and opportunities that have been
important factors in the growth of the Danish offshore
wind energy sector. The study finds that while certain
clusters and subclusters have significantly fewer
datapoints than others, they still represent key factors for
a successful and sustainable energy transition. Among all
keywords and concepts analyzed, 16 key lessons were
recognized to support and enhance the development of
offshore wind energy in Nova Scotia. This research
contributes to the field by offering comprehensive insights
into the success of Denmark‘s sustainable energy
transition and proposing recommendations for future
policy and practice in Nova Scotia, or other regions
anticipating the opportunity to harness their offshore wind
energy resources.
