Convocation

With convocation we celebrate the graduation of the students from the master’s programmes at UW, as well the graduation of distance learning students in the Westfjords. However, con-vocation only means calling or bringing toghether, and Háskólahátíð in Icelandic is a much wider term, it includes alumni, the most recent students, staff, instructors and friends of the University Centre.

Formal graduation is from the University of Akureyri. The University Centre will celebrate the occasion as annually in Hrafnseyri/Westfjords on June 17th – Iceland’s National Independence Day. Westfjords students graduating from any university are cordially invited to the convocation. As before, we expect University of Akureyri’s president to attend the Háskólahátíð.

For those who could not make it to convocation with their cohort, we keep the toques with your respective graduation year engraved to be handed out to you at any later ceremony. We see an annually growing number of graduates coming a year or even years later for receiving their toque with their graduating year engraved and we hope to see those who can not make it to the Westfjords this summer out of obvious reasons in one of the next years.

In 2024 we celebrate on that day also 1150 years of settlement by Ingólfur Arnarson and 80 years of the Second Republic. The programme in Hrafnseyri this year will be very similar as the years before. The ceremony has traditionally been out in the open-air, while weather permits.

Convocation/Háskólahátíð will be embedded in the national day’s festivities in Hrafnseyri. There will be a bus from Ísafjörður to Hrafnseyri and back free of charge. The programme of the day will be set with the flight schedule to/from Ísafjörður in mind.

Overnight stays/Student Dormitory:
We have inaugurated in December the new UW dormitory. There are still rooms left which are not rented out on long term rent. Short term rent is subject to restrictions: As the building has received public funding/loans, it may not compete with private short term providers. This is why minimum rental period is one week and the one-time payment for cleaning/linnen/administration is relatively high.
UW offers graduates and alumni on the occasion of graduation to rent a studio appartement in the dormitory for reduced price:

One week one person in a studio appartement 50.000 kr.
One week two persons in a studio appartement 59.000 kr.

Student dormitory rules apply. First comes first serves.
