UW’s student housing was built in 2023 to meet the growing demand for accommodation in Ísafjörður. It is located at Fjarðarstræti 20, just a 10-minute walk from the University Centre and only 3 minutes from a grocery store and the town centre.

Buildings and Layout

The housing consists of 40 studio apartments across two buildings, each divided into two wings:

  • AA and AB (one building)

  • BA and BB (second building)

Wings within the same building are connected.

  • AA and BA face the street

  • AB and BB face the ocean

Each wing includes:

  • 3 studio apartments on the ground floor

  • 7 studio apartments on the second floor (with a sleeping loft)

Shared Facilities

Each wing has access to a shared kitchen for every 10 students, equipped with:

  • Refrigerator

  • Stove and oven

  • Microwave

  • Dishwasher

Each building also has a shared laundry room on the ground floor, including:

  • 2 washing machines

  • 2 dryers

  • 2 drying racks

Studio Apartments

All studio apartments include:

  • Private bathroom (toilet, shower, sink, mirror cabinet)

  • Small kitchen area (sink, mini-fridge, electric kettle, cabinets)

  • Wardrobe and storage space

  • Desk, chair, and armchair

Additional features:

  • Ground floor units: 140 cm wide bed

  • Second floor units: sleeping loft with a 140 cm mattress + sofa

Students are provided with:

  • Duvet

  • Pillow

  • Bedsheets

Accessibility & Responsibilities

  • Accessible apartments for disabled residents are located on the ground floor

  • Students are responsible for cleaning their own apartments

  • Shared facilities are cleaned according to house rules

Please note that while you may indicate a preferred room, we cannot guarantee that you will be assigned that specific unit.

Price

Monthly rent (Master’s students):
All studio apartments cost ISK 139,000 per month.

For couple’s apartments, an additional 30% is added to the monthly rent.

Deposit

A security deposit of ISK 139,000 (equal to one month’s rent) is required and must be paid before May 31st.

  • The deposit is separate from the monthly rent

  • It will be refunded in full if the apartment is returned clean, empty, and without damage

The deposit applies only to students who:

  • have received an acceptance letter from UW

  • have been offered student housing

Housing benefits

Tenants with an Icelandic ID number (kennitala) and a registered rental agreement may apply for housing benefits. Housing benefits are monthly payments intended to assist individuals renting residential housing, whether in student housing or on the open rental market. The amount varies depending on income and household circumstances, but can be up to approximately ISK 50,000 per month.

Allocation Rules

Only students enrolled at UW can apply for long-term housing.
Students may also apply for a couple’s apartment.

Priority & Waiting List

  • New students have priority for housing until May 15th

  • After that date, applications are placed on a waiting list

If you are offered a room from the waiting list:

  • You will receive an email notification

  • You must respond within 2 days

  • If no response is received, the offer will be given to the next applicant

Rental Period

The standard rental period is from August 17th to June 30th.

Tenants may apply to extend their stay until August 14th.
To request an extension, please email studentagardar@uw.is before January 31st each year.

Please note:
Current tenants are given priority for extended stays.

Lease Terms

The lease is for a fixed term and cannot be cancelled during the rental period.

In exceptional circumstances, tenants may request to terminate the lease early.
Such requests are handled on a case-by-case basis and require agreement with the housing office.

Each apartment on the ground floor includes

Second floor studio apartments have a sleep loft, either with a high or low ceiling. They include:

  • Private bathroom

Shared spaces

Two main entrances are in each building, one for each wing.

There is a big shared space between wings. A kitchen, dining area and living room are in each wing. Stairs leading up to the second floor can be found in each wing.

Laundry rooms are also found in the shared spaces, one in each wing, which include:

  • Two washing machines
  • Two dryers
  • Two clothes lines
